Instructional Flight Syllabus

Program Goal

To introduce students to the core principles of paragliding through a tandem instructional flight. Participants will gain insight into flight techniques, equipment use, safety awareness, and weather evaluation—guided by a certified tandem instructor.

Who Can Participate

  • Open to individuals 18 years and older (subject to insurance and regulatory compliance with RRRG/USHPA).
  • No prior paragliding experience required.

Program Duration

Approximately 45–60 minutes, including pre-flight briefing, flight, and post-flight discussion.

Course Overview

  1. Welcome & Orientation
    • Introduction to the instructor and team.
    • Overview of what to expect during the tandem flight.
    • Addressing any participant concerns or questions.
    • Clarification of participant roles during the flight.
    • Student will be advised we will be providing ground school after first instructional flight.
    • Explanation of FAR 103 Exception:
      • Tandem paragliding flights are generally not permitted under standard FAR 103 rules.
      • However, an exemption allows certified USHPA instructors to conduct instructional tandem flights for training.
      • Requirements:
        • Conducted under the USHPA Tandem Program
        • Certified equipment and current instructors
        • Intent must be instructional
      • Our school and instructors fully comply with this FAA exemption.
  2. Risk Awareness & Informed Participation
    • Discussion of inherent risks (weather, turbulence, malfunction, hard landings).
    • Review of waiver and liability release.
    • Emphasis on open communication and informed consent.
  3. Understanding the Equipment
    • Paraglider wing with reserve parachute.
    • Harness and helmet use.
    • Fit checks and hands-on comfort session.
  4. Flight Readiness & In-Flight Instruction
    • Launch prep: posture and signals.
    • Landing procedures and body position.
    • In-flight learning: glider control, flight path, air movement.
    • Emergency protocols and student role.
  5. Weather & Environmental Awareness
    • Safe flying conditions and hazards.
    • Terrain and wind effect discussion.
  6. Student Responsibilities
    • Wear appropriate clothing and footwear.
    • Stay focused and communicative.
    • Follow instructor guidance.
  7. Pre-Flight Check & Review
    • Final gear checks and safety recap.
    • Answer questions and confirm readiness.
  8. Post-Flight Debrief & Progress Evaluation
    • Reflect on flight experience.
    • Discuss future training opportunities.
    • Proper equipment storage.

This instructional tandem program is a first step in introducing students to the world of paragliding with a strong emphasis on safety, understanding, and progression toward independent flight.
